The observational study, PREVEND, comprised 8490 subjects. Baseline urinary albumin excretion (UAE) was evaluated employing two separate 24-hour urine collections. The primary outcomes assessed were the occurrence of overall cancer and urinary tract cancer. The occurrence of cancers at other sites, along with mortality from overall, urinary tract, and other site-specific cancers, constituted secondary outcomes.
UAE baseline median was 94 mg/24h, with an interquartile range spanning 63 to 178 mg/24h. After a median observation period of 177 years, 1341 subjects developed cancer, of whom 177 had cancers related to the urinary tract. Adjusting for eGFR in a multivariable framework, a doubling of UAE was observed to be associated with a 6% (HR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02-1.10) increased risk of overall cancer and a 14% (HR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.04-1.24) increased risk of urinary tract cancer.
